New Norcia
Benedictine Monastery
Founded in 1847 by Spanish Benedictine monks, New Norcia stands as Australia’s only monastic town. Nestled within the picturesque Australian bush, the town is renowned for its remarkable blend of Spanish-influenced and Gothic Revival architecture.
At the heart of New Norcia lies the monastery — home to a community of monks who live a simple, communal life dedicated to prayer and work. This spiritual and cultural centre embodies the town’s unique heritage and enduring sense of purpose.
In 2025, the New Norcia Community initiated a major restoration program to preserve and protect this historic landmark for future generations. The works included extensive external masonry repairs, carpentry restoration, and repainting.
With the blessing of Abbot John, Eric Hood Painting was honoured to be entrusted with the delicate and challenging task of restoring this treasured site to its former glory. Our team approached the project with the utmost respect for the monastery’s history, craftsmanship, and cultural significance.
